IT² Internship

All students, male and female, after completing a minimum of 16 units of CIS classes with a B average, has the opportunity to earn credits on an internship working in a local IT company and fine tuning your emerging talents.

Requirements
Students enroll in a section of CIS 267 Work Experience before the enrollment deadline for a semester. They typically work an average of 12 or 16 hours a week at an organization's worksite for a 16 week semester (or 24 to 36 hours a week over 8 weeks in the summer). For each credit unit earned, a student must complete 60 hours (unpaid) or 75 hours (paid) on the job, which averages 4 or 5 hours/week in a 16 week semester. So, if a student is enrolled in the 1 unit section, he/she will work an average of 4 hours a week, 8 hours for 2 units, 12 hours for 3 units, or 16 hours for 4 units. Most students opt for 3 or 4 units of credit. Some training will no doubt be necessary at the worksite to familiarize students with the operation and we do ask that students spend at least half of their time engaged in meaningful technical work that enhances their skill level. A college supervisor will visit the organization twice during the student's internship to evaluate progress and receive feedback.

A week or two prior to the beginning of the semester in which the internship is to occur, onsite supervisors are asked to participate in an interview and selection process at Cuyamaca College . Students will come to these interviews with a resume and transcript. The internship supervisors will then select those students who seem to be the best match for their company.

Become an intern and start building your career!

The internships offer students the opportunity to utilize the skills developed in the classroom in a real-world environment. This experience will prove very meaningful when placed on a resume when you begin to look for work in the IT industry. Additionally, internship supervisors will be willing to write letters of recommendation if they have been pleased with your level of commitment and your technical performance on the work site.

"As an IT student at Cuyamaca College, I interned for two high-tech companies where I gained valuable experience in my chosen field. I plan to use that experience one day soon along with the references from the IT Professionals with whom I worked. I urge all students to take advantage of this great opportunity to better their learning experience and to make the most of their time spent at Cuyamaca College." - Ryan C. Wynn
