How you did it…

Getting started:  After being injured in the Navy, I was placed in a job working with computers, while recovering from injuries. I found that I liked working with computers an once I retired, I made plans to get a degree in the IT field. To get started, know what you want. Make a short and long term plan. Stay focuses and most important never give-up.

Most Significant Achievement:   Walking across the courtyard to accept my diploma, knowing that I have accomplished my first step towards my stairway to success.

Barriers:   The first step to over come was my age, and the next is that this is a male dominated field.

Working with Men:   I have always worked in a male dominated field, first in the military and now in the Information Technology field. You need to work as a team bouncing ideals off each other to get the best results. Most men in this field are easy to work with and are not judgmental, but like all work positions you must proved yourself.

Advice for Women:   It is never too later to achieve your goals, remember to set short-term goals and accomplish them; keeping in mind always stay focuses. Education is key, knowledge is power.

Typical Workday/Environment: Responsible for a network of 50 computers and printers. Start checking computer updates, run through computer work request for computers on the floor. Start working the work request with the regular interruptions of forgotten password, new hires, upgrading computers, training lectures and computer glitches that are always occurring.

Career Ladder: An Associate Science graduate, presently working to obtain a BA during the next 2-3 years.

Hobbies:   Ceramic, reading, sailing, home improvement projects and restoration of antiques.
